3 Tips of Windows Safety

Fresh air and sunlight make for the kind of welcoming and healthy environments we all want to create for our children. Windows and doors make this ideal possible, and they don’t have to come at the cost of your peace of mind. Here are some precautions you can take to increase your child’s safety around windows.

1. Implement window access restrictions Building codes typically mandate minimum window installation heights to prevent accidental falls.

Be mindful of children's climbing tendencies and avoid placing furniture near windows that could provide access.

When ventilation is necessary, prioritize opening out-of-reach windows and ensure they're closed and secured afterward.

2. Install window opening control devices For low-positioned windows or rooms requiring enhanced safety, consider ASTM F2090 compliant window opening control devices.

These limit apertures to less than 4 inches, allowing fresh air circulation while maintaining security.

In emergencies, these devices can be disengaged to fully open the window.

3. These control mechanisms can be integrated into new windows or retrofitted onto existing ones as accessories.

Educate children on window safety fundamentals It's crucial for kids to grasp basic window safety concepts. For instance, insect screens are designed solely to keep bugs out while permitting airflow. They're not intended to prevent people or pets from falling through open windows.
